The Nordic nRF52840 Dongle is a cost-efficient USB dongle for Bluetooth® low energy, ANT, 802.15.4 and 2.4GHz proprietary applications using the nRF52840 SoC. The dongle is targeted to be used together with desktop tools like nRF Connect for Desktop to provide an USB to RF bridge. The dongle supports the nRF52840 SoC and associated communication protocols including Bluetooth 5 and Bluetooth mesh, Thread, ANT and 2.4 GHz proprietary.

The Dongle provides access to a subset of the GPIO pins through castellation on the edge of the board. This matches up with a 100mil grid allowing the use of the dongle as a module in a larger system or extending with a stripboard. It also has 1 multicolor LED and a single button that are user-programmable.

The kit supports the standard Nordic Software Development Tool-chain using Segger, Keil, IAR and GCC. Example projects are available in the nRF5 SDK. Programming is performed through an USB bootloader supported by nRF Connect for Desktop as well as nrfutil. It is possible to do buttonless DFU of the dongle by adding a small code snippet from the SDK to custom FW images. All loading of code will be buttonless when using it as a gateway together with nRF Connect for Desktop.

The low cost makes the Dongle the best choice to provide the gateway functionality for nRF Connect for Desktop as well as for easy testing of larger networks.

Note: The nRF52840 Dongle does not have native support for debug capabilities. Debug support can be achieved by connecting to an external nRF52840 DK/nRF52 DK.
